Broadcast Media Class Meets Girls Volleyball

Lizzie S. ‘26, MarComms Intern
Drew School's Broadcast Media students kicked off the year with an exciting live stream of the girls' varsity volleyball game. From behind-the-scenes setup to on-air commentary, our budding producers brought the action to screens across the Drew community. Read about this hands-on learning experience from MarComms Intern, Lizzie S. '26!

On Friday, October 4, Broadcast Media students conducted their first live stream of the year, broadcasting the girls’ varsity volleyball game. Broadcast Media is one of over 20 visual and performing arts classes at Drew. The course allows students to learn about the many roles that go into video production, including directing, producing, camera work, and sound engineering. Students’ work in the class consists of creating short-form video pieces, in addition to live streaming Drew events like theater productions and sports games. Live streaming Drew events allows us to reach members of the broader Drew community who may not be able to attend the events in person.

Broadcast Media students arrived before the game began to set up the livestream equipment. The setup involved three different camera angles and a microphone for the commentators, who are two of Drew’s boys volleyball players. Gemma G. ‘27, Broadcast media year two student, shares that her favorite part of the streaming process is “being able to support Drew sports games while doing something I enjoy.” She also loves getting to work with classmates in all grade levels to produce videos and livestream events. Girls varsity volleyball co-captain, Audra S. ‘27, “loved having the game live streamed and hearing the fun commentary on our girls volleyball team.” As the evening continued, Broadcast Media wizard and teacher Ms. Greene went on several Target snack runs to ensure that the crew stayed well provisioned to provide top-notch coverage.

What a successful first live stream for the Broadcast Media class, and thank you to our girls volleyball players for providing quality content! Be sure to stay tuned for future live streams run by the Broadcast Media class. Links will always be accessible via the Drew School Instagram.
