Letter from the Head of School

For me, it doesn’t work to suggest that the school year is racing to a close. As this year concludes, my career wraps up. Together with the seniors, I anticipate our June 2 commencement with excitement and anxiety. Thrilled with Drew-inspired growth and daunted by the wonderful opportunities from which each of us will choose going forward. The students and I savor these last few weeks together.
The last month of the year shines a bright light on the many ways that our community’s individuals excel. As I write, we are basking in the afterglow of an amazing 280 Day, during which keynote speakers and a brilliant series of workshops inspired and challenged our students to learn about an array of societal problems, see ways to affect them, and to take action.

Our women’s soccer team continues its remarkable season at the league playoffs. Our annual Spring Concert took the stage with an array of instrumental, vocal, and dance numbers. This performance complemented both the recent Spring Art Gallery Walk, and the remarkable demonstration of faculty and student artistic talent showcased during the past few weeks’ assemblies. Talent surrounds us and we thrive in an appreciative daily environment. The annual Senior Awards’ assembly highlighted brilliant and noteworthy academic work and leadership evidenced by a large number of our seniors. My wife and I were thrilled at the energy we felt at the Prom Saturday night; what a rite of passage!

Of course, this is the time of year when the seniors and I acknowledge (with delight) that Drew will continue without our daily presence. The cycle of renewal continued earlier this month with both a new student night and a new parent/guardian night. Our Freshman Mentors hosted and welcomed a record number of new students with an array of activities that created instant ties to Drew, and a day later their parents met each other to begin their 4-year journeys.

Drew has never been healthier. Three years ago, when I envisioned my exit and the school I wanted to leave my successor and my colleagues, I had a vision of a healthy, stable community. Today, in every way, that vision has been exceeded, and I am thrilled.

Thank you seniors; thank you undergrads, colleagues, families past and present; thank you alums. This spring finds Drew green and growing in ways we all should celebrate.
