Drew has been dedicated to hands-on learning before there was that phrase. Drew has been a place where students are encouraged to explore existing passions and discover new ones. Drew has always been a place that intentionally supports individuals and their creativity. Therefore, we are excited to share some big news about the redesign of the third floor.
Over the last fifteen years, schools have worked hard to keep pace with the innovations in education due to technology and the way we live and learn as communities. Schools across the country are attempting to balance the needs of students and teachers in their learning environments. Young people and adults have become accustomed to spaces that allow for individualized learning in a dynamic and flexible design.
Drew is thrilled to announce our new design. We were inspired by the end product of an experiential elective class of 25 students and 4 teachers who created our first designs. We were supported by a partnership with One Work Place, the design furniture company (that supported this year's pilot of the first floor classrooms). Drew will be starting the school year with a newly reconfigured third floor, which has long been one of the architectural highlights of the school. The learning commons space will have seating for over 40 students and a collection of over 4,000 books in our first phase. This space will also allow gathering for college representative visits, class research, student group work and individual studying. One third of the library space will be re-appropriated into Drew's vision of an idea and design lab (maker space). This room, connected by a large 8x10 foot pocket door, will be home to a variety of courses. The room will be outfitted with several 3D, laser, vinyl and poster printers.
We are so excited that by the start of the 2016-2017 academic year, the transformation of the third floor will be complete. Please see attached images of the project and upgrades. Stay tuned for an invitation to come see the space!
