Goodbye Letter from Sam Cuddeback

I am grateful for this opportunity to say “thank you, and goodbye” to Drew School. These past 25 years have been the most rewarding time of my life. Drew’s students, their families and many others who have served our mission have been (and will remain) my extended family. We have grown from an impoverished school with very little reason to believe in our future to a school of choice for an overwhelming number of Bay Area students. Importantly, we have retained that sense of being a caring community in which bright, curious students thrive. I am thrilled that we still focus on each individual student’s ideas, dreams and potential. I couldn’t be prouder of the fact that John Drew’s “coaching school” concept is alive and thriving here as I leave.

My daughters chose to attend Drew; for two years our dinner conversations were full of great Drew stories about dynamic teachers, DEALL opportunities, and all kinds of important social “stuff”. The opportunities to watch them compete together on two teams and go various directions in the arts was amazing. Each gave back to Drew because she wanted to, and the opportunities they had to lead and explore were amazing. As a Drew parent, I couldn’t have been more pleased.

San Francisco needs Drew. We offer a unique opportunity for a certain kind of student, one who wants to grow individually within a caring group of friends and teachers, one who seeks to find a unique path and not be forced into a certain mold for success. May this 108 year ethos continue! In this topsy-turvy world, students need the constancy and reassurance that Drew offers.

The Class of 2016 and I leave this phase of our Drew relationship together; I hope we will remain connected to Drew and each other as “alums”. The class members, bright, committed and caring, emulate all the school qualities that have made this 25 year lived dream so special for me. Thank you one and all for being a part of Drew and me.
