Drew Shanti Alliance Attends the 7th Annual Hawai'i DEI Conference in Oahu

Students from Shanti Alliance—Drew’s social justice leadership group—had the incredible opportunity to attend the 7th Annual Hawai'i Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Conference in Oahu, Hawaii over Mid-Winter Break. This immersive two-day event, hosted at Le Jardin Academy, provided an invaluable experience for students and educators to engage in discussions around the theme “Cultivating and Growing Our Spheres of Belonging.” The conference aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of how identity, equity, and inclusion intersect to create more supportive, inclusive school communities.
Drew’s Shanti Alliance had the opportunity to learn from expert practitioners, participate in experiential activities, and reflect on their personal growth in connection to the conference theme. From the moment they arrived, the group was greeted by keynote speaker Kevin Kahakula’akea John Fong, who guided attendees in exploring the concept of kuleana—personal responsibility and gifts. This theme was reinforced through various activities, including a hands-on agricultural experience in the Kalo (taro) beds. There, Drew students worked alongside others to tend to the land, deepening their connection to culture and ancestry.
Vanessa C. ‘25 shared her experience of the workday, reflecting, “I had a sense of connection with my ancestors. Agriculture can be symbolic and a reminder of where you came from.” This meaningful work in the Kalo beds helped the students not only understand the land but also the profound importance of honoring ʻĀina (the land) as integral to community and belonging.
The afternoon session included participating in Pilina Circles—small group discussions designed to build deep, meaningful relationships through storytelling and active listening. These circles gave the Drew students an opportunity to reflect on their own identities while learning about others in a safe and supportive space.
On the second day, the Drew students were inspired by keynote speaker Pahonu Coleman, a 19-year-old artist, advocate, and climate justice leader. Following Pahonu’s address, students attended two workshop sessions, including one facilitated by Drew’s own Cece R. B. ‘25 and Vanessa C. ‘25. Their workshop, “Authentic Expressions: Navigating Culture and Code-Switching,” provided a safe environment for discussing identity and cultural navigation in a predominantly white space.
Reflecting on the experience, Cece R.B. ‘25 remarked, “Presenting yourself with your gifts decolonizes social interactions. When we typically introduce ourselves, we are saying our worth is our corporate identity. It makes you appreciate community when you recognize what gifts everyone has.”
For Adriana M. I. ‘25, the experience of learning about the land’s importance stood out, saying, “They really value the land as part of the community or family versus something that they own.”
The conference not only emphasized the importance of belonging and identity but also provided concrete actions and strategies for creating more inclusive environments. Through a combination of keynote speakers, workshops, and reflective activities, the Drew Shanti Alliance left Oahu with renewed commitment to fostering inclusivity and belonging within their school and communities.
The theme of “Cultivating and Growing Our Spheres of Belonging” resonated deeply with the Drew students, and their experience at the conference will undoubtedly continue to inspire their efforts to make Drew an inclusive and supportive space for all. As they returned to San Francisco, the students were filled with gratitude for the opportunity and eager to continue advocating for social justice and belonging at Drew.
The Drew Shanti Alliance looks forward to applying the insights and tools they gained from the conference in the planning of ShantiFest, a half-day event on Wednesday, April 30 that provides students and faculty with opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations and activities centered on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. The event aims to foster learning, dialogue, and connection, while encouraging participants to broaden their perspectives and take an active role in building a more just and inclusive community.
